Ontario Bear Hunting Season starts

August 21/2013 – The Ontario Bear hunting  season officially started on August 15th.  We started our bear hunting on Sunday and its been really hot for hunting.  Hunters have all seen bears but haven’t been able to connect yet with anything.  We’ve got lots of great sign on all the baits.  Yesterday was the hottest day of the summer and we had a whopper of a storm come through last night with hail the size of a “Toonie”($2.00 Canadian coin).

May 16/2013 Update

May 16/2013 – Ice is off all the lakes and we’ve had a bit of rain a couple of days ago.  That should green up the grass for the bears.  They need quite a bit of green grass in the spring to blow out the bowel plug from the winter and be able to start eating their normal diet.

Late Spring 2013

March 18/2013 – Ontario Bear hunting news

Wow! What a lot of snow last night and still going strong.  So much for having an early spring and getting the planes in the water!  Last year we had ice off on April 8th.  This year we still have 2 feet of ice or more.

Greg usually like to get started early with cleaning up the bear hunting sites as we have trees fallen over onto the baits or our treestands have fallen over with the tree.  We are supposed to get 8′ of snow and its well on its way there.

2013 Bear Hunting Season

Greg was out yesterday checking on all the bear stands for this coming season from the main camp.  He said there was lots of damage to the trees along the trails and some where we have stands at.  We had some pretty heavy snowfalls plus ice which bent and broke lots of smaller trees along with breaking some big ones as well.  There was Bear sign everywhere.  They had a good winter with all the snow cover for their dens an this spring didn’t really flood any of the dens out as it thawed very slowly.  Also there was not a lot of wolves around which really do a number on the bears in their dens.  Should be an awesome year for the bear hunt.

Lots of Snow!

We got quite the dump of snow yesterday and are still getting some today.  Transcanada highway was closed from west side of Saskatchewan all the way to Thunder Bay last night because of blizzard conditions.
